Early Music is not a relic of the past - it’s a living genre. We aim to rediscover its exotic, diverse sounds for a modern audience. Based in Southern California, our programmatic concerts draw from sacred, folk, and art traditions across the centuries. Our programs pair beloved works with rarely performed repertoire, newly transcribed and arranged by our team of composers, alongside original compositions in historical styles. Through all of this, we embrace improvisation and the art of embellishment, allowing the music to breathe and evolve in new ways, each performance shaped with passion.
Our Vision
Vox Obscura is already making a mark as a one-of-a-kind early music consort that brings an authentic passion to our programmatic concerts. Our five-year plan includes collaborating with instrumental groups, professionally recording an album in 2026, an out-of-state tour, and consistently performing concerts to bring more early music to Southern California and online spaces. Many of our plans are concrete, while others will take a little longer to accomplish, such as expanding our digital footprint. In everything we do, we will work to increase our quality and continue to explore a wide variety of early music from different cultures.
We are fortunate to have a group of talented, multifaceted professional musicians who all take part in the creative process, as well as dedicated directors and board members to administrate and keep us focused on the same vision. This team-oriented structure allows us to experiment with unique concert concepts that translate the mysterious elements of early music for a modern audience. It also helps tremendously that most members of the group have performed with each other in various professional capacities over the past decade!
Most importantly, we are deeply passionate about music-making and are excited to invite you to join us on our mission!
